Walking from Mt Aspiring National Park to Fiordland National Park along the Routeburn Track is a very rewarding and a great walk during both summer and winter. Enjoy spectacular alpine views and lush native bush settings, roaring waterfalls and picture perfect mountain tarns.
It is really important to be fully prepared for any type of weather no matter what season you are walking in, and also check track conditions with the Department of Conservation in Queenstown or Te Anau before heading out.
Walking outside the DOC Great Walk Season can be a great experience for experienced trampers who are well prepared. There are often fewer people, and the mountains can offer stunning snow vistas. The huts are unmanned during this time and you cannot rely on running water or cooking facilities. Hut tickets still need to be purchased in advance, however there is no booking system. If you are considering walking during this time, you need to know the dangers associated. Be sure you are prepared for the current track conditions and all types of weather.
Walking during the DOC Great Walk Season has a number of benefits including longer days and warmer weather (in general) plus running water and cooking facilities and at each hut. Hut wardens provide information about the track plus flora and fauna, and are on hand to provide emergency assistance if required. Each hut sleeps approx. 40 people, and hut tickets must be booked and purchased in advance – there are times during the season the huts are fully booked, so booking in advance is recommended.
The DOC Great Walk Season dates for 2014/15 are as follows: 24 October 2014 until 30 April 2015.
